Tegan Morris is going places. And she’s looking for young explorers to join her on an international adventure.
Hamilton twentysomething Tegan Morris is many things: university graduate, advocate, mentor, self-published author, blogger and vlogger. She also lives with muscular dystrophy, but she’s not letting that stop her. Although diagnosed as a baby and reliant on a wheelchair from 18 months, Tegan has always been going places, and this time, she’s looking for two exceptional care workers to come with her.
Travelling will one day no longer be an option for Tegan, so, she’s making it happen now. Funded by family, friends and out of her own pocket, she’s planning to set off in June on her ultimate summer road trip across the US, beginning in the Big Apple. On the way, she’ll volunteer at muscular dystrophy-sponsored summer camps, where she’ll share her experiences with kids and their families. Her aim is to help make their diagnoses less lonely and scary, and inspire them to achieve their own goals.
Tegan, who uses an electric wheelchair and a machine to help her breathe at night, requires round-the-clock care, and she’s seeking two young women to join another support person to form an extra-special crew to provide it. With the help of Mycare, New Zealand’s largest community support platform, she’s searching for two physically and mentally fit young explorers with the flexibility to travel for up to three-and-a-half months. The chosen workers will be paid an hourly rate, and their flights, accommodation and group vehicle hire paid for.
Tegan says she aims to live by “the three Cs”: connection, compassion and courage; she has the latter tattooed on her arm. All three will come into play as she approaches her dream trip and are qualities she hopes her care workers will also possess. Applicants’ experience is less important than their personality, she says.
This won’t be first time Tegan has travelled to the US in recent years, having visited LA in 2014 to go to Disneyland (and try to meet her idol, Ellen DeGeneres) and 2016 to attend VidCon. But, she says, “I’m at a point in my life where I feel like it’s important to push the boundaries even further. So if you see this and are interested in helping somebody live their dream, sign up to the website and come and find me – and let’s see what adventures we can go on together.”
