Coffee and a chat with Heather
What is your role at Mycare?
I'm an ambassador for Mycare and also an organiser on the platform. My role as an organiser is matching support workers for people who may not have the time to do it themselves. This allows me to add the personal touch to the platform and I am learning fast about health funding. As a Mycare Ambassador, I have been enjoying building community connections and encouraging workers to become confident contractors so they can support their community. It's a guiding role, just a bit of a helping hand to get started on the Mycare journey.
What drew you to work here?
I really like the ethos of Mycare - connecting community members; so, it aligns really well with my community-led development principles. More power to the people!
What does a great day look like?
My part-time role involves working remotely from my home near Helensville (North-West Auckland). My favourite day is Wednesday when we hold our online team meeting where we update and share our work journey while getting to know each other. Community Organiser role: This allows me to add the personal touch to the Mycare platform. I talk about Mycare as I go about my daily life in my community, so every day is a good day, really.
What is the most important thing you would like people to know about Mycare?
It’s empowering; it’s all about choice and being central in the decision-making about who you have to work alongside you. Don’t be intimidated by the fact that it’s online - it’s easy to use, help is only a phone call away and the staff are dedicated to creating a positive user experience for everyone.
What is the most exciting project that you are working on?
The Helensville District Health Trust’s vision is “to be the healthiest rural community in New Zealand”, and I’m working to gain a partnership that co-designs a process to introduce Mycare into the community. It’s also a great opportunity to boost local economic development as a result; such a “win/win” situation. Sam Johnson, Mycare's Head of Community, and I presented to them just last night so will be following up to see where to next.
What hobbies do you have?
I’m a flax weaver and enjoy a range of handcrafts, and I’m on the board of our local Art Centre. I’m doing a ceramics class next weekend too, I’m also treasurer for the Auckland Classic Scramble Club (off-road motorbikes) and help to run the events alongside my husband, Chris. It’s very much a family affair with Chris’s two older sons and our 10 year old daughter also riding.
I enjoy keeping fit and walk with a local group, attend line dancing (yee hah), yoga and flexercise classes weekly. In March this year I walked the Heaphy Track. I’m studying rongoa rakau (native tree medicine) so I get to walk in and study the trees of some really amazing North Island native forests. I love our rural life with our two dogs and 11 sheep (mowers) who all have names and personalities, oh and of course the motocross track. I’m also a landlocked sailor so if you need a crew member, let me know!
