What is your role at Mycare?
I have a couple of different hats that I wear for Mycare. One of which is working with Robbie on the Live life programme. We help young people in the Christchurch area to increase their confidence and get back into the workforce. Part of the delivery of the programme are classes that range from CV training to a day in the community garden. The goal is to give participants as many tools as we can to build their confidence and get them back into work. It is really amazing to watch the transformation that the participants go through from start to finish. I also do an array of projects ranging from video creation, marketing, and community engagement.
What drew you to work here?
I moved here in January from Atlanta Georgia in the US. It is a city of about five million people so Christchurch has been a little bit of a change. A friend of a friend knew Sam and so when I moved to Christchurch I reached out. Originally I had been planning on working on a farm for my time in New Zealand but the people at Mycare were so passionate and the work was so important that I jumped at the opportunity to get more involved. I love working in an environment that has such a meaningful goal.
What does a great day look like?
A great day at work has to start with having a bowl of porridge with Robbie. Then Live Life participants come in for a class, ideally the cooking class so there is more food involved. It makes my day to see a participant’s confidence grow and unfold. Later in the afternoon, I would work with the Christchurch team on getting the word out about the great things that Mycare can do.
What is the most important thing you would like people to know about Mycare?
Mycare is made for you! It is designed to make your life easier and more comfortable, both from a worker and organiser perspective. Our goal is to empower people to find their own support and work.
What is the most exciting project that you are working on?
Right now we are fully integrating the Live Life program onto the Mycare platform. Participants are now able to use our platform to communicate with mentors, set up meetings, log their volunteer hours, and even look for paid work.
What hobbies do you have?
I came to New Zealand to play rugby. I am playing for Linwood. I really appreciate the opportunity to play with such a diverse team. I have loved playing here and being part of such a strong team environment. When I’m not playing rugby I am usually outside hiking, surfing, or running.
