It can be hard to bounce back after hiring someone who was just not right for the job. To avoid these pit falls we have compiled a short list of signs that you can watch for to ensure that you hire the right person every time.
Clarity of process
Make sure you have a clear process for finding and ruling out candidates. The best way to do this is by having a clear understanding of what you want this person to do and how you are going to structure their hours.
You might be looking for someone to offer respite care. This means the hours aren’t set but are flexible. This could suit a working mum or a student who is just looking to pick up some casual hours from time to time. In a situation like this you could ask questions around availability and the work hours the individual needs.
To establish a candidate’s suitability we recommend first having a phone conversation with them then following up with a face-to-face interview if they sound promising.
If you feel the person needs to be trained in providing the correct support for you, make sure you let them know how long training is going to take and what rate you will pay them if it differs from your ordinary rate. The same applies if you decide to give workers a trial period. It is important to be clear about any such conditions.
Having someone support you is such a personal experience that you need to ensure you feel comfortable with the person and they have the right attitude. A ‘can do’ attitude may be worth more than actual experience.
Their enthusiasm should shine through all their communications with you and highlight their ability to communicate their availability and capabilities from the outset. If your initial communications feel difficult or if they don’t tick all your boxes then they are never going to be the right person for you. Move on to the next candidate.
Reviews or references
Workers may have been reviewed by other Mycare users who have used their services. This is a good starting point. However, if you would like further information you can ask for references.
When checking references have a set of questions to ask. This is a great opportunity to ask about punctuality, ability to complete task in a timely manner, reliability etc.
