Helena Stephens was looking for a change in her career when she came across Mycare. Helena, 41, had been working as a nanny in Wellington for around 20 years, spending the past six years with a family who was about to see their youngest head off to school.
“I really enjoyed being a nanny, it’s quite empowering to know you’ve contributed to a child’s life – seeing them grow from newborns to five-year-olds or even teenagers – but I had achieved everything I wanted to in that profession,” Helena said.
The timing was right for Helena to make a change. She was looking to develop her skills further, and was eager to work with a variety of people.
This is when she turned to Mycare, hoping to find the change she was after – and she did.
After signing up, Helena was recommended a temporary job by Mycare – Caring for two children with autism.
“I was hesitant because I didn’t have any experience with autism, but I wanted to learn. I really got along with their mum and after a chat on the phone we met in person. Each day was really different, but I learnt so much from the kids. They taught me something new about themselves every day.”
After a few short months with Mycare, Helena has enjoyed the experience and is eager to take on new clients.
Helena says Mycare really suits her life and she’s happy to provide support in the wider Wellington community.
A break from the long hours of being a nanny, and avoiding the commute into Wellington in rush hour traffic, has been a big perk of the job.
“The easier commute is a novelty for me. I used to travel an hour-and-a-half to my job and work 10 hour days – now I drive to see my clients with little or no traffic, and my jobs vary from 2-5 hours,” she said.
“I particularly enjoy the freedom that comes with Mycare. By being an independent contractor you can work as much, or as little, as you like.
“I am eager to see Mycare grow, especially in areas outside of the city, like my local community in the Hutt Valley.
“Mycare’s given me work life–balance and a huge sense of purpose – it’s nice to know what I’m doing is really helping others.”
