Language has the power to unite and divide. It can bring us together and create a mutual understanding. The Mycare community has speakers of over 21 different languages!
Communication is key so why not challenge yourself to learn a new language? Especially considering 2019 is the International Year of Indigenous languages. We often have individuals seeking support-workers that speak a particular language. Therefore it is important that if you do speak another language, you make a note of this on your profile.
Learning a new language can also have added health benefits as it keeps the brain active and may even delay the onset of Alzheimer's. So let's get started! Here are some websites you can visit to download free language apps so you can begin to learn the basics.
New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL)
One of New Zealand’s three official languages is New Zealand Sign Language. There are approximately 20,000 people who use NZSL to communicate. These include individuals with a hearing impairment, as well as support workers and family members of a person with a hearing impairment. Learn NZSL is a free online learning portal that interactively demonstrates how to use NZSL in common situations. The learning modules use videos, resources and exercises to help you learn basic signs. To see the impact knowing a little sign language can have on individuals check out this video where a whole town secretly learnt sign language to surprise one of their neighbours.
Kupu (Te Reo Māori)
Kupu is a mobile app that uses your smart phone's camera to instantly translate objects into Te Reo Māori. Te Reo is one of the three official languages of New Zealand and it is estimated that there are approximately 50,000 confident Te Reo speakers. Kupu is free to download and can be used anywhere any time. Download it from the Apple store for iPhones here and the Google play store for Androids here.
Duolingo is a global mobile app and website that teaches 31 languages from across the globe for free! And for Game of Thrones and Star Trek fans you can also learn Valyrian and Klingon. Duolingo is interactive, making learning a language fun. At present there are over 300 million users with 21.3 million of them learning Spanish! Check out Duolingo here.
The Mycare community is culturally diverse, therefore we recommend that if you are looking for work on Mycare that you list the languages you speak or understand on your profile. Please contact us if you have any queries 0200 677 700 or firstname.lastname@example.org
