Max’s story as a student studying Bachelor of Arts and using Mycare to provide company and support to older people.
Where you are at with your studies and what motivates you to work in the Healthcare industry?
I have now completed my Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and French, and live and work in London as an Events and Marketing Manager. Although I don’t currently work in the Healthcare industry, I thoroughly enjoyed doing so through Mycare while I was at university. It was rewarding work to help improve an older person’s quality of life, and as a visitor, it really didn’t feel like work - it was like having a good friend.
What was your journey with using Mycare to find work?
It was hardly a journey, so much as a very straightforward stroll! Mycare was able to easily connect me with an older person who needed an extra pair of hands.
How has helped you give back to the community?
I may be a slightly unusual case, because giving back to the community was my whole reason for joining Mycare, and it is the best platform for doing that. Social isolation and loneliness are a scourge on New Zealand’s older people, and I wanted to do something about it. Mycare helped me to help someone.
Any stand-out stories or moments that you experienced whilst being a carer?
On one of my very early visits with Clare in 2017, she made a comment about how she’d been meaning to get back on her bike. Clare’s capacity for strenuous physical activity was limited by a knee operation at the time. You should have seen the look on her face when I turned up with my bike and suggested we go for a ride.
Anything you would like to share to other students who are considering working as a carer?
I would really recommend Mycare as a user-friendly digital solution for connecting carers with people. However, even to students who aren’t studying towards a healthcare career, like myself, I would highly suggest giving Mycare a go. It’s an easy to way to make a huge difference to someone’s life, and get paid to do it! You have everything to gain, and nothing to lose, the whole experience is awesome.
