Art groups
Art is for everyone! Whether its pottery, sculpture, glass blowing, animation, painting, drawing or even just colouring in. Art has many therapeutic benefits for all ages and is a great way to pass time. Art is known to relieve stress, encourage creative thinking, boost self-esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment.
From beginners, to budding artist’s, to part time professionals below is a list of websites to find art clubs, groups and classes in your local area:
- meetup.com for classes and groups organised by other locals interested in the same forms of art as you.
- Art Trails NZ for local art schools, tutors and workshops.
- For individuals with a disability, your local Disability Information Advisory Service may be able to link you to funded art activities.
- Event finda lists many adult art classes across the country ranging from beginner to advanced.
- Risingholme Learning is a Christchurch-based adult and community learning centre. They offer a range of accessible courses including; Art, Woodwork and Pottery.
- Arts Access Aotearoa has a great directory for accessible creative art spaces nationwide.
Dance groups
For children and adults with a disability
Starjam is a New Zealand organisation that offers music workshops, community events, private and public gigs throughout the country. Starjam is specifically for young people aged 6 to 25 living with a disability. You can find the details for your local coordinator and the classes on offer here.
A quick google search for ‘dance studios near me’ will pull up the dance studios in your local area. Many dance studios are able to provide integrated dance classes, just speak to your local studios head teacher.
Jolt Dance is a Christchurch based dance company that offers dance classes for all ages and abilities focusing on skill development and performance opportunities. Dance therapy is an organisation who run creative movement dance and art classes throughout Auckland. They offer specialty classes for children, youth, and adults with a disability and also ACC clients. You can find the details of the different programmes here.
Touch Compass is New Zealand’s leading professional inclusive performance company! They world globally with choreographers and directors to collaborate with disabled and non-disabled performers. Initiate Dance is an Auckland-based dance company that has dance classes and holiday programs where they provide a safe, fun, accessible and enjoyable environment for young people to participate in dance. Find out more information on them here.
For older adults
Event finda is a site where dance teachers can list their classes. There are many adult dance classes listed across the country on this website, ranging from beginner to advanced. Check out Event finda here.
New Zealand Royal Academy of Dance offers a Silver Swans ballet class specifically designed for older learners to help improve mobility, posture, co-ordination and energy levels. If this sounds like a bit of you check out more information here.
Zumba is a world famous exercise program that was created by a Colombian dancer and choreographer. Zumba is now offered across the globe! Zumba classes are a fun way to get active and met other local people. The Zumba dance routines include hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, mambo and aerobic moves that are appropriate for dancers of all levels.
